Nvidia Denies China’s Claims of Hidden Kill Switches in AI Chips
Nvidia has publicly refuted allegations from Chinese regulators that its AI chips contain hidden kill switches or backdoors. Chief Security Officer David Reber stated unequivocally in a blog post that Nvidia GPUs do not and should not include such features. The denial comes after the Cyberspace Administration of China requested documentation regarding potential vulnerabilities in the H20 chip, a GPU tailored for the Chinese market.
The tension underscores Nvidia's precarious position between U.S. export controls and Chinese demands for transparency. U.S. restrictions aim to prevent AI chips from being used in military or surveillance applications, while China seeks assurances against remote shutdown capabilities. Reber warned that embedding backdoors WOULD compromise global digital infrastructure and erode trust in U.S. technology.
